UI design: unintuitive tennis tiebreak UI

27 April 2024

Indian Wells tennis final, Alcaraz vs. Medvedev.

When I first saw the initial state of the new UI for the tie-break, I thought it was interesting.
But then, when I saw it in action, it confused me: if I don’t read the numbers, I wouldn’t know the score...
I expected it to work like this
you don’t even need the numbers 5 and 6.

That way, all the focus is on the essence of the UI, which clearly communicates who is ahead and how close each player is to winning the tie-break. I bet a kid would like it—focusing on numbers is an adult thing, something learned, not instinctive... the latest version is my favorite.

P.S.: The more I look at the original UI, the more I think it’s not just unintuitive, but actually misleading. For instance, it looks like Medvedev didn’t score the first two points; they're grayed out..."
